A week before my first Valentine's day here in the US, my then teammates asked me what my plans were. They knew about me having a boyfriend overseas so that question was pointless. It was actually a preempt to invite me over for dinner with a few more couple friends. Of course I declined because I knew that was a pity invite. After all, what am I going to do without a date? Stare at them for hours and serve them dinner?! I didn't think so!
Being in an LD relationship, I get these "so-you-have-a-boyfriend-but-you-don't-have-a-date" look all the time. I call them the pity look. Initially, I hated it, but I have learned to deal with it. So what if I don't have a date? So what if I'll spend V-day all by myself where dating for us meant spending hours on the phone? At least I married the man of my dreams, which is more than I can say for some of these people! Sure, they have dates - but that's all there is to it - a date. Every year, it's a different person. Year after year, a different date.
Hubz and I have taught ourselves that V-day is just like any other day. After all, when you love someone you're with, doesn't it feel like Valentine's every single day? I'm blessed because I get the chance to fall in love with him over and over again everyday. We don't get to be together but we get to talk, and plan, and dream of our future.
One Valentine's Day sometime in the near future, I know that we'll get to spend it together. In the meantime, this special Valentine's greeting goes your way. Happy Heart's Day!
